Shift-Worker: Stress, Health and Solutions

One-third of Canada's paid labour force work some form of non-day or rotating shift. Shift workers are more likely to suffer from insomnia as well as excessive daytime sleepiness and are almost twice as likely to fall asleep at the wheel. Long term shift work takes years off your life.

Shift work has increased enormously during our modern era, which can pose many difficulties and cause increased stress to employees. Fatigue due to shift-work decreases productivity, increases accidents, changes mood, lowers resistance to infection and affects most body functioning.
This workshop focuses on the impact and causes of shift work stress on sleep, energy cycles, health and relationships and provides practical stress management strategies based on the S-O-S Principle™ to reduce the negative impact.
The stress management strategies provided will center on reducing the impact of shift work stress on sleep, illness and support by answering questions on how much sleep do you need, how do you know if you are getting enough sleep, what stress management strategies are important to maintaining your health as a shift-worker and how can you keep connected to those around you.
OBJECTIVES
- Understand the concepts and stress symptoms associated with shift work stress and the unique challenges associated with them
- Recognize the impact shift work has on sleep, nutrition and relationships and the consequences of ignoring them
- Employ a Sleep Personality Profile to ensure a best-fit to your job
- Utilize organizational and individual stress management strategies based on the S-O-S PrincipleTM to best reduce the effects of shift work stress such as eating for alertness
