Men Differ In Handling Stress
Men generally tend to deal with stress differently than women. Women tend to share, while men tend to bottle the stress up inside of them. For men, this can eat away at them causing high blood pressure, gastrointestinal issues, sleep issues and a loss of perspective.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, men die at higher rates than women from the top 10 causes of death, with stress being one of them.
Some of us suffer from what I call ‘terminal seriousness’ from the stress created in our workplaces and personal lives. Terminal seriousness can hamper communication, problem solving and teamwork. Taking some “playtime” can help relieve this stress from building. When we take a break, it helps us to increase our productivity and our creativity, while decreasing stress.
Beverly’s Hot Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating Men’s Health Week:
Develop positive outlets to relieve your stress while you are at work. Life was meant to have a rhythm. We deal with a stressful situation, we come down to a normal state, ready to deal with the next stressful situation.
Toys can be just the distraction we need to come back down to a normal state so that we can prepare for the next problem or issue that we need to deal with. Office toys can help us to work out our stress, and for men, it seems to be a more socially acceptable way of dealing with workplace stress.
While a few toys in the workplace can be good for us, it’s probably not a good idea to bring in your entire collection of Tonka trucks or Star Wars action figures. People who tend to procrastinate may find toys to be too much of a distraction, and should exercise some restraint with their playtime.
Men’s Health Week
The purpose of Men’s Health Week is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. Finding outlets to work out your stress throughout the day, such as squeezing that stress ball or throwing that paper airplane, can certainly prevent stress from building and negatively impacting your health.
Lighten up and play – your body and mind will thank you.
