Common Sense Not So Common Especially Around Your Health

November 4

Common Sense Day

Common Sense Not So Common

Why is common sense not so common? Common sense is one of the most revered qualities in the workplace. People with common sense are seen as reasonable down-to-earth reliable and practical but here’s the catch: common sense is neither common, nor sense.
If common sense was common, then most people wouldn’t make many of the kinds of decisions they do everyday that negatively impact their stress or health. They wouldn’t buy stuff they couldn’t afford. They wouldn’t smoke cigarettes or eat junk food. They wouldn’t gamble. In other words, people wouldn’t choose to do a multitude of things that are clearly not good for them.

As I get older, I am having to work harder and harder to stay healthy and fit. Common sense would say that this is just something that you need to choose to live a long and satisfying life.  However, like most men and women, balancing all of the roles that I play leaves very little time for taking care of myself, even though I know it is the most important choice that I should make.

So, I have to look for ways to build healthy habits into my day that don’t require me to make a choice. One of these was getting a Anthro Standing Desk. The most recent purchase was getting a Wobble Chair. Why did I get my Wobble Chair? Because I didn’t like feeling like I HAD to stand all day for my health. This ergonomic wobble chair engages my core muscles and is suppose help stimulate my metabolism. Guilt gone. Health solution found. Common Sense intact.

So Here Are My Hot Tips For Building Resiliency In Celebrating Use Your Common Sense Day

  • Common sense can cause us to make poor rather than sound judgments. Gather the facts, look at past experience, and talk to others, before making decisions which could have dire consequences.
  • Keep an open mind to all the possibilities rather than just confirming the solution that you want to see.
  • While we often think with our emotions, this can lead to negative outcomes. There are times when it’s better to think with our analytic brain instead of our heart.
Finally, when it comes to common sense and your health, look for ideas on how to choose fitness and habits in a way that is fun and interesting
